We love the look of the no overhang scottish style roof line as well. Then the end of the bottom chord was cut to allow the top chord to overhang. As in the example above the bottom chord ran the width of the shed. However there is another way of constructing the truss.

A roof overhang can allow for the incorporation of soffits another roof ventilation option and they can help cover entryways and move rain water farther away from the shed and foundation. This is a special circumstance because some shed plans will have the top chord attach to the roof with a birdsmouth cut out. The ideal shed roof overhang depends on the purpose of the overhang the location and microclimate of the building. If you want to add 3 1 2 or 5 1 2 inches of overhang then read this step now.

We will protect shade the west windows with cedar awnings grates. Install the roof sheeting. With a flat shed roof the roof simply extends past the wall plate to provide an overhang. For gabled roofs the roof rafters extending beyond the wall caps creating an angled roof overhang on the eaves.

If you are building a shed roof with an overhang you will need to incorporate this into your shed roof plan and allow for the overhang as you build. With our house we are planning minimal east and west overhangs and ample south and north overhangs. Continue below for no overhang. Begin installing the roof sheeting with a full 8 ft sheet aligned at the top edge of the truss and put a single nail in the outside corner at the top of the truss.

When you are finished you will have 3 1 3 or 5 1 2 inches of unsupported overhang on all 4 sides of your shed. If you follow this design on a building that has no roof overhang whatsoever the gutter will need to be removed and re hung on the new spaced out fascia board or siding board and you may need to extend the roof drip edge by 1 3 4 to assure that roof drainage enters the new spaced out gutter. Cut a 14 degree angle across the wide side of four straight and clean 2 4 s or 2 6 s. With a large front overhang the shed can incorporate a nice outdoor seating area with patio.

With the west east overhangs the main use is siding window protection and keeping rain snow from foundation.
